Story Circles are Coming

September 7, 2010

You talked, we listened, and we are excited to launch a whole new Sunday morning education curriculum for children beginning September 12!  We invite everyone to join us in the sanctuary at 10:00 on September 12 to learn more about this curriculum, and how we will implement it.  Here are some of the important aspects of story circles, based on what we heard from you:

What We Heard How Story Circles Responds
1.  Many people expressed a desire for children’s education during 11:00 worship. 1.  Twice a month, kids in grades K-5 may leave worship at 11:15 for a Story Circle center.  They will not repeat what they do at 10:00 if they also come then.
2.  We need something for the children of adults who come to learn at 10:00. 2.  Twice a month, kids in grades K-5 will have a Story Circle center from 10 until 10:45.  Once a month, people of all ages can join a drama ministry at the same time.  And once a month, all ages will meet together.
3.  People want a small, manageable volunteer commitment. 3.  Volunteers will teach one Story Circle center twice—on two consecutive weeks, with slight variation for two age groups.  And they should only do this once a “season” if everyone pitches in.  (See related article in newsletter.)
4.  It is too hard for kids preschool to 5th grade to all learn together. 4.  Children younger than Kindergarten will be in the nursery with Ms. Heather, and will share in a simple Bible story.  Story Circle centers will be divided into two groups: K-2 and 3-5.
5. The program needs to engage our kids. 5.  Story Circle centers will involve lots of different learning styles: using music, storytelling, food and much more to teach.
6.  The program needs to teach the Bible. 6.  Story Circles will focus on one story of the Bible every 8 weeks, learning about that same story in eight different centers.  We begin with the Beatitudes in September and October.
