New Small Group on Boundaries, Beginning January 15!

Boundaries on property are easy to define, usually. We know where our property ends and a neighbor’s begins. But boundaries as personal property lines can be a bit challenging. Many times, we think that as people of faith, we should focus on loving and giving, not how to set limits on those things. This small group, which will run for nine weeks beginning January 15 through and including March 11, will use the book and workbook Boundaries to help us wrestle with these questions:

*Can I set limits and still be a loving person?

*How do I answer someone who wants my time, love, energy or money?

*Why do I feel guilty when I consider setting boundaries?

Pastor Beth will facilitate this study, which coincides with a five-week sermon series on similar topics. You must register by Sunday, January 8, for books to be ordered. Call or email the church office to register. The cost for the book will be $8.

Adult Small Group: New Study Beginning November 6!

Join our Sunday morning Adult Small Group (in the Fellowship Hall at 11:15 am) starting November 6 as we prepare for a new holy season. Pastor Beth will be the facilitator. The study will focus on the book by Mike Slaughter, “Christmas Is Not Your Birthday: Experience the Joy of Living and Giving Like Jesus.”

Every year, we say we’re going to cut back, simplify, and have a family Christmas that focuses on the real reason for the season-Jesus. But every year, advertisements beckon, the children plead, and it seems easier just to indulge our wants and whims. Overspending, overeating, materialism, and busyness rob us of our peace and joy and rob Jesus of his rightful role as the center of our celebration.

This Christmas, cut through the hype that leaves you exhausted and broke at the end of the year. Instead, experience the peace of knowing that God is truly with us, the joy of giving sacrificially, and the love of a Savior who gave everything he had for us. In five short, engaging chapters, Pastor Mike Slaughter inspires readers to approach Christmas differently, and be transformed in the process.

New Fall Class Begins

A new 10 week class entitled “Companions in Christ: The Way of Blessedness” will meet in Room 101 on Tuesday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 am beginning October 11. This study which is based on the scriptures called the Beatitudes offers a small group experience in Spiritual Formation. This class if filling up quickly, so sign-up today! The deadline to register is Monday, October 3.

New Opportunity for Kenwood Youth!

Beginning September 11, there will be a small group on Sunday mornings (11:15 am) for Kenwood’s youth (Grades 6-12). This group will be led by Wendy Malamphy and will give our youth an opportunity to learn about the Bible and what it means to their lives to be a Christian. We hope your child/children will participate in this new Christian education endeavor. Our Minister for Children and Youth will be present on the 11th as our young people and Ms. Wendy get to know each other and talk about the weeks to come.

Kenwood Spiritual Growth Assessment

One of our tasks as a church is to provide ways that people can grow in their discipleship.

A handout of Basic Christian Traits: fifteen traits of disciples, divided into three categories, loving God, learning about God, and serving God is available by clicking on the link below. These categories correspond to Kenwood’s vision statement that we are a church led by faith to love, learn and serve. Please review this handout prior to filling out your assessment.

We would like to hear from you about where you need to grow. Please click on the following link to access a copy of the KUMC Spiritual Growth Assessment. We invite you to complete one before April 3 and tear off the Summary at the bottom of page four and place it in the offering plate or return it to the church office. We will be using the results to develop small group and other ministry opportunities for later in 2011.

New Sunday Morning Small Group Begins in January

It is important for people on the discipleship journey to be involved with a small group who can support their walk of faith. For that reason, Kenwood offers small groups starting at various points during the year, and lasting different lengths of time.

A new Sunday morning Small Group study for adults will begin on Sunday, January 10, 2010. The group will be reading the book The Hole in Our Gospel by Richard Sterns. If you would like to keep the book after the study, the cost will be $10. The Hole in Our Gospel is the story of how a corporate CEO faced the struggle of how to fully serve God, and what he learned in the process. It is a compelling call to live a life of justice as a Christ follower.

Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity

Worship and Small Groups begin October 18

We hope that you will join us at Kenwood October 18 through November 8 for a sermon series and small group opportunity entitled “Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity.” Our nation is experiencing what many have described as the “American Nightmare.” Increasing consumer debt, declines in savings, lower income growth, rising housing costs, and a volatile stock market are all contributing to economic insecurity. We live in a society that tells us “you deserve it now,” whether or not we can afford it or really even need it.

Beginning October 18, we are going to explore what the Bible teaches us about financial management. We will do this in worship and in three opportunties for small group study. We’ll look at what others have learned by working through financial challenges and watch some informative video clips. Each week we’ll be providing you with some tools you can use to assess your financial situation and develop a financial plan with a biblical foundation.

These are important issues that we cannot ignore. We hope you will join us as we look at how we can manage our financial resources and truly experience that God is “Enough.”

Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White Small Group

An adult small group will begin studying Adam Hamilton’s book Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White on Sunday, September 13 at 10 a.m. in room 101. The study will last five weeks. If you haven’t signed up yet, go ahead and come on Sunday for the first class!

New Sunday School Class Study Begins

The No Experience Necessary Sunday School class will begin a new study next month, and invite anyone interested to join them. They will be reading If Grace is True by Phillip Gulley (a Quaker minister and writer) and James Mulholland (a theologian with ecumenical experience in the American Baptist and United Methodist denominations). This book brings us a new look at God’s boundless love and a new understanding of divine will and human destiny. The class meets on Sundays at 10:00 am in Room 106 (right Fellowship Hall).
