Leadership Retreat

Kenwood’s Church Council and anyone else who would like to join them will hold their annual Leadership Retreat on Friday & Saturday, January 20-21 at the United Methodist Center in Glen Allen. We will be evaluating ministries from 2011 in light of our vision statement and doing some planning for 2012. This is always a time of fellowship, learning and growing. We begin at 6:00 pm on Friday and conclude by 4:00 pm on Saturday. The cost is free – Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast and lunch are included. Please call or email the church office by Sunday, January 15 to register.

Memorials or Honors of Loved Ones at Christmas

This year during the Advent season we offer two opportunities for you to honor or remember loved ones. You may choose to place a poinsettia in the sanctuary or you may make a donation in the same amount of money to our special mission giving emphasis, The Louisa County Earthquake Recovery Program.

On Tuesday, August 23, 2011, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck in the heart of Louisa County, making it the largest Virginia earthquake in historic times. The purpose of this program is to help Louisa County homeowners repair or rebuild uninsured or underinsured owner occupied dwellings. 100% of all funds raised for the Louisa County Earthquake Recovery Program will go toward assisting Louisa County homeowners rebuild.

Both donations may be made in honor or memory of someone of your choice, and both will be included in our special listing of gifts in December. Order forms are available in the pews. The amount is $11.50 each. Please return your order form with payment to the church office or place it in the offering plate. Orders will be received no later than Sunday, December 4.

Acolyte Training

Acolytes have been part of the church in one form or another for over 2,000 years. They are an important part of the worship service because they bring the light of Christ into the worship service, and take it out into the world as the congregation leaves.

At Kenwood, children and youth second grade and older are invited to become acolytes. A training which teaches the symbolism and ritual of acolyting, as well as the mechanics, is offered each fall. This fall’s training will be Sunday, September 25 at 6:30 pm. It will last about 30 minutes. A parent or guardian should attend with their child.

Safe Sanctuary

Important Training!

Keeping children safe when they are at Kenwood is of the utmost importance. Therefore, on Sunday, September 18, at 7:00 pm there will be an important training opportunity for those who volunteer in our children’s programs. If you work in the nursery, teach Story Circles, lead KidZone, God’s Pride, Higher Ground, or volunteer at VBS, your attendance is very important.

In addition to reviewing Kenwood’s Child Protection Policy, Cindy Lee, Minister of Discipleship at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, will join us to talk about making/keeping Kenwood a “safe sanctuary.” Everyone is invited to this wonderful and important learning opportunity. You may not work directly with the children, but have an interest in this topic. If so, please feel free to join us. Parents, teens who volunteer with the younger children, seniors…please plan to attend. New Opportunity for Kenwood Youth!

Beginning September 11, there will be a small group on Sunday mornings (11:15 am) for Kenwood’s youth (Grades 6-12). This group will be led by Wendy Malamphy and will give our youth an opportunity to learn about the Bible and what it means to their lives to be a Christian. We hope your child/children will participate in this new Christian education endeavor. Our Minister for Children and Youth will be present on the 11th as our young people and Ms. Wendy get to know each other and talk about the weeks to come.

Second Hand Rose Giveaway Day – This Weekend!

It is finally here! Rain or shine join us this weekend at our Second Hand Rose Giveaway Day! EVERYTHING IS FREE! The items are gently used clothing in all sizes, household items and toys for infants and children.

It will be open for our members, Friday, August 26, from 5:00-8:00 pm and for the public on Saturday, August 27, starting at 9:00 am until 2:00 pm.

Church Picnic

Mark it on your calendar! All are invited to the Church Picnic on Sunday, September 11, from 5:00–6:30 pm. Summer is ending, families have returned from their vacations, and exciting things are happening at Kenwood! Join us on the back lawn of the church to rejoice in being together as a church family. Kenwood will provide burgers (meat and vegetarian), hot dogs and drinks. Bring a side dish to share (salads, chips, desserts), a lawn chair or blanket to sit upon, and a healthy appetite!

Bring School Supplies for Elmont

Kenwood is a Partner in Education with Elmont Elementary, our local elementary school. One of the things we do in partnership each year is to collect school supplies for the school.

Now through Wednesday, August 31, you are invited to donate the following items and place them in the collection box in the sanctuary foyer. These supplies go to students who have difficulty bringing their own supplies.

Supplies Needed:

Washable glue sticks
Black and White Marble Composition Books
16 or 24 Pack Crayons
8-Pack Washable Markers
#2 Pencils
Baby wipe packs

VBS Night 3–Believe Fully!

On Wednesday Night at VBS, we believed fully that the rain would not dampen our spirits–and it moved in and moved out in about 15 minutes! We also learned about the Feast of Booths, and about how Jesus invites us to believe fully in him. In science, we did an experiment with hard-boiled eggs, in crafts we made napkin rings, and in rec we played on the slip and slide!Click to view slideshow.

Night Two At VBS Focuses on Giving

On Tuesday night at the Shake It Up Cafe, Scraps the raccoon introduced us to lots of new foods, and told us that he liked to cook in order to give food away to people who are hungry. Our kids make recipe boxes in crafts, and in Bible Story Time learned about three important festivals the Israelites celebrated, and how they were focused on giving God thanks.
