What A Little Light Can Do-Children’s Christmas Pageant
December 6, 2011Advent 2011: Lighting A Path
November 22, 2011When you step out into the darkness of an early morning, the path before you is often very dark. But as your eyes adjust to the darkness, it becomes brighter, and then as sunlight begins to come into the landscape it becomes easier and easier to see.
Advent is like that–it is a time of light becoming brighter, the light of the Christ Child. When we begin the month, we are searching and anticipating. It is too early to sing carols, and the abundance of Christmas in the shopping malls seems harsh. But as the month draws on and the story unfolds, the path becomes brighter, until at last we arrive at Christmas Eve.

Memorials or Honors of Loved Ones at Christmas
November 22, 2011This year during the Advent season we offer two opportunities for you to honor or remember loved ones. You may choose to place a poinsettia in the sanctuary or you may make a donation in the same amount of money to our special mission giving emphasis, The Louisa County Earthquake Recovery Program.
On Tuesday, August 23, 2011, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck in the heart of Louisa County, making it the largest Virginia earthquake in historic times. The purpose of this program is to help Louisa County homeowners repair or rebuild uninsured or underinsured owner occupied dwellings. 100% of all funds raised for the Louisa County Earthquake Recovery Program will go toward assisting Louisa County homeowners rebuild.
Both donations may be made in honor or memory of someone of your choice, and both will be included in our special listing of gifts in December. Order forms are available in the pews. The amount is $11.50 each. Please return your order form with payment to the church office or place it in the offering plate. Orders will be received no later than Sunday, December 4.
Thanksgiving Worship
November 15, 2011You are invited to gather with your Kenwood family on Tuesday, November 22 for a light soup supper at 6:15 pm followed by informal Thanksgiving Worship at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary. This Holiday Season: Don’t Take the Basics for Granted!
November 3, 2011
This year help fill bags for the Freedom House Christmas Day Dinner for the homeless and working poor! “Giving Bags” contain basic items like deodorant, soap, shampoo, diapers, toothbrushes and paste that many of us take for granted. Help make a difference in someone’s life this Christmas Season by helping to fill as many bags as possible. A board with a list of items needed is in the Sanctuary foyer for you to make your selections. You can choose between completing a full bag or buying items that will be consolidated later to make a complete bag. All Giving Bag items will be due to Kenwood on Sunday, December 4. Please place the bags/items in the box provided in the Sanctuary foyer. Adult Small Group: New Study Beginning November 6!
October 25, 2011Join our Sunday morning Adult Small Group (in the Fellowship Hall at 11:15 am) starting November 6 as we prepare for a new holy season. Pastor Beth will be the facilitator. The study will focus on the book by Mike Slaughter, “Christmas Is Not Your Birthday: Experience the Joy of Living and Giving Like Jesus.”
Every year, we say we’re going to cut back, simplify, and have a family Christmas that focuses on the real reason for the season-Jesus. But every year, advertisements beckon, the children plead, and it seems easier just to indulge our wants and whims. Overspending, overeating, materialism, and busyness rob us of our peace and joy and rob Jesus of his rightful role as the center of our celebration.
This Christmas, cut through the hype that leaves you exhausted and broke at the end of the year. Instead, experience the peace of knowing that God is truly with us, the joy of giving sacrificially, and the love of a Savior who gave everything he had for us. In five short, engaging chapters, Pastor Mike Slaughter inspires readers to approach Christmas differently, and be transformed in the process.
To register or for more information about this exciting new study, contact the church office at 798-7444 or main@kenwoodumchurch.org.
